Dragonfly, Not Always

Dragonfly at rest

I was in a taking pictures type of mood and while staying with some family with a rather large garden. I decided to see what I could find so went for a wander…

I have heard stories that they have a sting that can knock out a horse, but I am sure its just one of the old wifes tales….

Anyway, I have seen loads of Dragonfly flying around ponds and lakes as a child and was amazed at the size and speed of the things.  There was something about them that enthralled my young mind.

I was never able to get all that close to one, without it flying off at speed into the distance, so I was pleasantly surprised to finally find one of these beautiful Dragonfly’s hanging from a tree.

It didn’t move even with the lens right next to it!

I must say I was a little bit scared that it would sting me on the nose I was so close, but thankfully it didnt even twitch it’s beautiful lace like wings.

I’m not saying that Dragonfly‘s are small, but when I was a child they always seemed  big to me….

To close to a Dragonfly for comfort

But I am pretty sure that even if I did have the opportunity when I was a child to get this close, I would most probably have stayed well away.

Well Dragonfly‘s can knock out a horse you know, imagine what it could have done to a small child, with a large imagination!
